Where is MY Midnight?

I recently read Sister Souljah's latest novel, Midnight: A Gangster Love Story. It is a novel based on the character, Midnight, from her earlier novel, The Coldest Winter Ever. It is not a sequel. It is more of a prequel, which gives insight to Midnight's life from around 6 years to 14 years of age. It it a well written novel and has a cliffhanger towards the end. If you've read Winter's tale, you know what eventually happens to Midnight. The only piece of his life left unanswered is what immediately happens after his 1st wife disappears and the events that happened before he goes to jail.

After reading Midnight's tale, I fell in love with this fictional character. But, is he really fictional? Are there Midnight's that actually exist is this world? Are we raising our men to be Midnight's and our daughters to look for qualities in this type of man?

Any answers or comments?

There must be Midnight's in this world. I just have not found them yet or overlooked them. Midnight had a belief in a greater power, so any real Midnight's in the world would have to humble himself to a higher power just as the fictional character. The woman he choses would have to be humble herself as well. The problem may be that not enough women will humble themselves to a man...

I fell in love with the character as well. He's a great man of loyalty and honor. He has a lot of qualities that that I would love to find in a guy today. I hate the ending though, I wish it wouldn't have left me hanging.I need a follow up book ASAP> Really it bothers me, even now.

Lachelle, I felt the same as you about the ending, but that is what good writer's do. They leave you wanting MORE. So Sistah Souljah did a great job at that. It had been years since I read Coldest Winter Ever. After re-reading it, I remember Midnight's fate. It really made me sad when I realized all the pain he & his family would go through. I love this Character and hope his story will inspire our young Men.

Yes, there are "Midnight's" in this world. I'm porud to say some of the men in my family share a lot of his qualities. Gentlemen.

I love the Midnight and Akemi characters myself. The care Souljah took in writing this book is very evident. My problems are though, that the book ends abruptly and there really is no plot. Midnight and his family are just too perfect. I needed him to be more flawed and human. I needed certain things to be answered. Too many unanswerable questions. What happened to the dad? It seems only Midnight and Umma hold that secret. Who won the game? Why did Akemi's father snatch her away like that... after he came to the states and signed the papers? Seems unreasonable. Is he against it or for it? Why didn't IRS pay them a visit. How do you bank 80k without the government sniffing around?

I already feel Souljah is setting up for a part two, which is fine, but I just wished she would of closed this story better/tighter. I love souljah's writing skill and she has my full support and respect, so I will be reading the part 2's or 3's or whatever she drops. The Coldest Winter Ever is a great book. The ending is one of the "baddest" cliff hangers I've ever read. I don't think it was meant to be one, which makes it that much greater. So much to think about after the last word and I felt "full", whereas with Midnight I felt like I was starving and the story only filled me 50%.

I'm looking forward to see Souljah's next move with this series. Truth be told when I heard talks about a sequel, I was against it. I was so in love with the Coldest Winter I ddn't want anything to "tamper" with that cliff hanger, lol, but I soon shook those thoughts. Anywho, I think the story of Midnight would have worked better if it was a standalone book.

Peace, and you can check me at slimsticks.blogspot.com

Jody, I feel ya :). To get more answers on Midnight, I had to re-read some on TCWE. The new release has questions in the back. I had forgotten all about Midnight's friendship(crush) on Sistah Souljah's character and how he went to jail after a guy tried to rape his sister & how he was raped in jail. We also know he ends up marrying a woman and owns a barber shop from the last chapter in TCWE. I cannot wait to read Midnight's sequel to find out about Akemi. I assume he never went to Japan though after he proteceted his sister & was jailed though. I really want to go before he came to America & learn what happened to his father. Well, tell the men in your family they are an invaluable asset to our community.

IK, I was planning on doing the same thing and re-read TCWE, but I left my book back home. I was starving to make the connection from the Midnight from Midnight & the Midnight from the TCWE. You did jog my memory tho... so you think Midnight never makes it to Japan? What age was he arrested? I'm going to say he made it to Japan and during that trip is when his sister was almost violated and he comes back feeling guilty and because of all the emotions being so raw he kills sloppily leading to his arrest.

I do remember at the end of TCWE that he was married and owned a barbershop. I do remember that.

and I will tell them; ) just know ladies, they aren't the only ones out here. Is a diamond readily avaible to everyone? But rocks are, correct? Just wait for your diamond... and don't ever settle for rocks. Much love.

I think there are some midnights out there...my question is where? definitely not in st louis mo...all the guys I meet are so use to having what they want the way they want it that when they meet a self respecting young lady such as self they run I'm too much of a challenge and that's so sad that respecting yourself and wanting a relationship based on something other than sex is considered a challenge or being bitter.
